Instant Pot Apple Crisp: Your New Favorite Easy Dessert
Apples are truly one of nature’s most versatile fruits, shining in both sweet and savory dishes. Hailing from Washington state, where apples are not just a crop but a way of life, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing countless varieties, each with its unique charm. This abundance and the sheer joy of cooking with apples inspired me to adapt a classic dessert into a modern kitchen marvel: Instant Pot Apple Crisp.
While I cherish several traditional apple crisp recipes, adapting one for the Instant Pot® has been a delightful revelation. It might sound unconventional to make a “crisp” in a pressure cooker, but the results are astonishingly good, offering a depth of flavor and tender apple texture that’s hard to beat, all with minimal effort. This recipe transforms the humble apple into a luxurious dessert, perfect for any occasion, from weeknight treats to festive gatherings.
The Magic of Pressure Cooking: Tender Apples, Effortless Process
One of the greatest advantages of using the Instant Pot for apple crisp is its ability to cook apples to a perfect tender consistency rapidly and evenly. The pressure cooking environment creates a moist heat that infuses the apples with spices and flavor, making them incredibly soft and flavorful without turning them into mush. It’s a truly hands-off method that allows you to focus on other tasks while your dessert practically makes itself.
Achieving That Signature “Crisp” Topping
The term “crisp” in Instant Pot Apple Crisp can be a bit misleading if you’re expecting an oven-baked crunch directly from the pressure cooker. Inside the Instant Pot, the topping will be firm and sweet, but not traditionally crispy. However, achieving that coveted golden, crunchy topping is incredibly simple and takes just a few extra minutes!
For that perfect crisp exterior, you have a few excellent options:
- Broiler Method: Transfer individual servings to oven-safe dishes or the entire inner pot (if oven-safe) to your oven. Broil on high (around 450°F or 230°C) for 2-5 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning. This will toast the oats and caramelize the brown sugar, creating a beautiful, crunchy crust.
- Air Fryer Lid: If your Instant Pot model has an air fryer lid, this is arguably the easiest way to crisp the topping. Simply place the air fryer lid on the pot and follow its instructions for crisping or broiling, usually for 5-8 minutes at a high temperature, until golden brown.
These quick finishing touches transform a delicious pressure-cooked dessert into an irresistible apple crisp with a satisfying textural contrast.

Ingredient Spotlight: Selecting the Best Apples for Your Crisp
The success of any apple crisp hinges on the apples themselves. Choosing the right variety, or combination of varieties, is key to achieving a balanced flavor and desirable texture. Here’s a guide to help you pick the perfect apples:
- Granny Smith Apples: These are a go-to for baking due to their firm flesh and tart flavor. They hold their shape well under pressure and provide a wonderful contrast to the sweet topping. Their tartness is essential, as it prevents the dessert from becoming overly sweet, especially when combined with sugar and spices.
- Gala Apples (or other red varieties like Honeycrisp, Fuji): I often pair Granny Smiths with a sweeter, softer red apple like Gala. Galas offer a milder sweetness and a slightly softer texture that complements the tartness and firmness of Granny Smiths beautifully. Using a blend creates a more complex flavor profile and a varied texture in the cooked apples. However, if you prefer, using all one variety is perfectly fine – just adjust sugar to your taste if using all sweet or all tart apples.
When preparing your apples, remember that the size of your chunks will affect the final texture. For a firmer bite, cut larger 1.5-inch pieces. For a softer, almost applesauce-like consistency, opt for smaller chunks. Also, don’t feel obligated to peel every single apple. Peeling at least half is recommended to help prevent a “burn” error in the Instant Pot and to create a smoother apple base, but leaving some peels on adds fiber, color, and a rustic touch.
The Indispensable Crisp Topping: Crafting Sweet Perfection
The topping is what truly makes a crisp, well, crisp! It’s the delightful contrast to the tender apples beneath, offering a buttery, sweet, and oat-filled crunch. Here’s what makes ours special:
- Old Fashioned Oats: These are crucial for the right texture. Unlike quick-cooking oats, old fashioned (rolled) oats hold their shape better during cooking and contribute to that satisfying chewiness in the topping. They don’t disappear into the mix, providing substance and structure.
- Brown Sugar: Using brown sugar instead of white sugar is a game-changer for the topping. Its molasses content adds a deep, rich, caramel-like flavor that white sugar simply can’t replicate. It also contributes to a more moist and cohesive topping.
- Softened Butter: Ensuring your butter is softened allows it to be easily incorporated with the dry ingredients. When combined with flour, salt, brown sugar, and oats, it creates those wonderful small clumps that are the hallmark of a good crisp topping. Using your hands or a pastry cutter ensures the butter is evenly distributed without overmixing.
When you add the topping to the Instant Pot, remember to sprinkle it loosely over the apples. Resist the urge to stir it in. This layering technique allows the topping to steam and cook separately, forming a distinct layer over the fruit, ready to be crisped to perfection.

The Age-Old Debate: Ice Cream or Whipped Cream?
Once your Instant Pot Apple Crisp is ready, the final flourish is arguably the most fun part: choosing a topping! For me, a generous scoop of cold vanilla ice cream melting into the warm crisp is pure bliss. The creamy, cold sweetness of the ice cream beautifully complements the spiced apples and the hearty crisp topping.
However, if ice cream isn’t available or if you prefer a lighter touch, a dollop of freshly whipped cream is an equally delightful alternative. Its airy texture and delicate sweetness provide a lovely counterpoint to the rich dessert. Don’t hesitate to try both, or even a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra decadent treat!
Essential Tips for Instant Pot Apple Crisp Success
Even with a straightforward recipe, a few insider tips can elevate your Instant Pot Apple Crisp from good to extraordinary:
- Pot Size Matters: This recipe is designed for 6-quart or 8-quart Instant Pots. If you’re using a smaller 3-quart pot, remember to reduce the recipe by one-third to prevent overfilling and ensure proper cooking.
- Preventing the “Burn” Error: The Instant Pot is generally robust, but the “burn” error can occur if liquid isn’t sufficient or if denser ingredients stick to the bottom. Peeling at least half of your apples and ensuring you have enough apple juice helps. Additionally, always spray the bottom of your pot generously with nonstick cooking spray before adding ingredients.
- The Power of Resting: After cooking, letting the apple crisp stand for a few minutes after the pressure release allows it to cool slightly and thicken. This brief resting period helps the flavors meld and the texture set, making it even more enjoyable.
- Adjusting Apple Texture: The cooking time of 1 minute at high pressure results in perfectly tender apples. If you prefer a firmer apple texture, you can experiment with a 0-minute cook time (which means the pot comes to pressure and then immediately signals completion), allowing the residual heat to cook the apples.
Embrace the ease and deliciousness of Instant Pot Apple Crisp. It’s a dessert that brings smiles, warmth, and the wonderful aroma of spiced apples into your home with minimal effort!

Instant Pot Apple Crisp is a delicious, easy to make Instant Pot dessert recipe. Tender apples with lots of sweet topping all cooked together in one pot.
Cook: 1 min
Pressure Building & Release: 12 mins
Total: 28 mins
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 7 medium Apples (about 9 cups chopped) (I use Granny Smith & Gala)
- Juice of ½ of a Small Lemon
- 3 teaspoons Cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon Nutmeg
- ⅛ teaspoon Ground Cloves
- ¼ cup Sugar
- ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- ¾ cup Apple Juice, or cider
Crisp Topping
- ½ cup Butter, softened
- ½ cup Flour
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- ½ cup Brown Sugar, packed
- 1 ¼ cups Old Fashioned Oats
Instructions
- Spray the bottom of the pot with nonstick cooking spray.
- Wash, peel, and cut the apples into large chunks (about 1 ½”). Add them to the pot.
- Add the lemon juice and toss the apples in it.
- Sprinkle the cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and sugar over the apples. Toss together.
- Add the vanilla and apple juice. Stir.
- Add the butter, flour, salt, brown sugar, and oats to a mixing bowl. Use a pastry cutter, or your hands to mix together until combined, and makes small clumps that hold together.
- Add the topping mixture to the pot, loosely, covering the apples. Don’t stir.
- Place the lid on the pot and set the steam release knob to the Sealing position.
- Press the Pressure Cook/Manual button or dial, then press the +/- button or dial to select 1 minute. High pressure. The pot will take several minutes to come to pressure.
- When the cook time is finished, turn the steam release knob to the Venting position to do a Quick Release of the pressure.
- When the pin in the lid drops back down, you can open the lid. Turn off the pot.
- At this point, use oven mitts to remove the inner pot to a heat safe surface. Let the apple crisp stand for a few minutes to cool a bit and thicken a little more. You can serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- If you want to crisp up the topping, dish servings into oven safe dishes and broil on 450° for a few minutes. Alternatively you can transfer the entire pot of apple crisp to a baking dish and broil for a few minutes to crisp up the topping. If you have an air fryer lid you can use that.
Notes
- Delicious served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Crisp up the topping with an air fryer lid or transfer to a baking dish and broil a few minutes.
- The texture of the apples will depend on how large you cut them. Smaller chunks will make this closer to an applesauce consistency. Larger chunks won’t cook as fast. If you like a firmer texture, use 0 minutes cook time.
