Gluten-Free Sweet Potato Pie with Marshmallow Meringue: Your Ultimate Holiday Dessert

This Gluten-Free Sweet Potato Pie offers a delightful and unique alternative to the traditional pumpkin pie, making it a spectacular centerpiece for your holiday spread. Its distinctive flavor profile, combined with an elegant appearance, is guaranteed to be a massive hit at any festive gathering, from Thanksgiving to Christmas dinner. The harmonious blend of the spiced cookie crust, creamy sweet potato custard, and perfectly toasted marshmallow meringue creates an irresistible dessert experience that will have everyone asking for the recipe and savoring every bite.

One of the most appealing aspects of this pie is its deceptive simplicity. Despite its impressive look and gourmet taste, it’s surprisingly easy to prepare, even for those who might be new to gluten-free baking. Many gluten-free pie recipes can be intimidating due to the delicate nature of gluten-free crusts, often making them difficult to roll out without tearing or crumbling. However, this recipe utilizes an incredibly simple press-and-bake crust, completely eliminating the stress and mess often associated with traditional gluten-free pastry techniques. This innovative approach ensures that even novice bakers can achieve a perfectly crumbly, flavorful, and sturdy base without any fuss, setting you up for success from the very beginning.

Crafting the Irresistible Nutty Cookie Crust

The foundation of this exceptional sweet potato pie is its flavorful, gluten-free crust, which is anything but ordinary. We create this by combining crunchy pecans with gluten-free graham crackers, a touch of rich brown sugar, luxurious melted butter, and a generous hint of The Spice Hunter Highland Harvested Saigon Cinnamon. This particular cinnamon is not just any spice; it’s renowned for its intense, sweet, and warm notes, which truly elevate the crust from ordinary to extraordinary. The depth of flavor from this premium cinnamon infuses every crumb. The resulting crust is beautifully spiced, rich with buttery flavor, and perfectly crispy, providing an ideal textural and flavor contrast to the smooth sweet potato custard it cradles. The addition of pecans adds an extra layer of nutty depth and a delightful crunch, perfectly complementing the earthy sweetness of the potatoes and making each bite a complex sensory experience.

Preparing the Velvety Sweet Potato Custard

Once your sweet potatoes are perfectly cooked and tender, the rich and creamy custard filling comes together in a flash, allowing you to quickly move to the next exciting stage of pie creation. My absolute favorite and most efficient method for preparing the sweet potatoes is using an Instant Pot. This technique guarantees consistently tender, perfectly steamed sweet potatoes every single time, making the process effortless and foolproof. The Instant Pot drastically cuts down on traditional cooking time and ensures a smooth, lump-free base for your custard, which is essential for that luxurious, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Instant Pot Sweet Potato Perfection

Utilizing your Instant Pot for preparing sweet potatoes is a true game-changer for this recipe, simplifying a key step. Here’s a quick guide to achieve perfectly steamed sweet potatoes with ease:

  • Place a steamer rack or trivet inside your Instant Pot and add 1 cup of water to the bottom. This water creates the steam needed for cooking.
  • Thoroughly wash your sweet potatoes. There’s no need to peel or chop them before cooking, which saves valuable prep time. Place them whole on the rack.
  • Secure the lid firmly on the Instant Pot, set the valve to the “sealing” position, and cook on MANUAL (or high pressure) for 15 minutes.
  • Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow the pressure to naturally release. This means waiting patiently until the float valve drops on its own, which can take an additional 10-15 minutes. This natural release helps the sweet potatoes finish cooking gently and prevents them from becoming waterlogged.
  • The sweet potatoes will emerge incredibly soft and tender, making them exceptionally easy to peel and mash for your custard, ensuring a smooth and creamy texture.

For the custard itself, we further enhance the flavor profile with more of The Spice Hunter Highland Harvested Saigon Cinnamon, alongside a generous measure of The Spice Hunter Madagascar Pure Vanilla Extract. The Spice Hunter is renowned for its unwavering commitment to quality, utilizing a proprietary cold-press process to extract their vanilla. This meticulous method truly preserves the rich, complex, and aromatic flavor notes of the vanilla bean, resulting in an extract of unparalleled quality. You’ll undoubtedly notice the superior difference this high-quality vanilla makes in the depth and aroma of your sweet potato filling, adding a layer of sophistication. Along with these exquisite spices, we incorporate eggs for essential structure and richness, heavy cream (or a dairy-free alternative like full-fat coconut milk) for a luscious texture, and brown sugar to achieve that signature sweet and perfectly spiced profile, creating a truly harmonious and indulgent custard.

This particular kit simplifies the entire brining process, making it accessible even for those new to brining. The brine features a delicious savory blend of zesty lemon, aromatic herbs, pungent garlic, and a carefully selected medley of traditional spices, all working in harmony to guarantee a tender, juicy, and incredibly tasty main course that will be the highlight of your holiday spread.

Making it Dairy-Free and Allergy-Friendly

This sweet potato pie recipe is incredibly versatile and adaptable, making it remarkably easy to modify for various dietary needs and preferences. If you or your cherished guests require a dairy-free option, rest assured that this pie can be easily transformed. Simply substitute the butter in the crust with a high-quality vegan butter, and replace the heavy cream in the sweet potato custard with full-fat coconut milk. The rich, creamy consistency of full-fat coconut milk (ensure you shake the can well before opening to combine the solids and liquids) works wonderfully to maintain the custard’s luscious texture without compromising flavor. Furthermore, the light and airy marshmallow meringue topping is naturally dairy-free, making this pie an excellent gluten-free and dairy-free Thanksgiving dessert solution for individuals with specific food allergies, intolerances, or dietary preferences. This thoughtful adaptability ensures that everyone gathered around your holiday table can indulge in a generous slice of this magnificent, inclusive holiday treat, creating joyful memories without dietary concerns.

The Magical Marshmallow Meringue Topping

The crowning glory of this sweet potato pie, elevating it from delicious to absolutely divine, is its light, airy, and beautifully toasted marshmallow meringue topping. The secret ingredient that imparts this meringue with its incredible stability, irresistible chewiness, and delightful texture is a simple yet effective jar of marshmallow creme. Sweet potatoes and marshmallows are a classic, beloved pairing, particularly during the holiday season, and the addition of marshmallow creme not only enhances this cherished flavor combination but also ensures your meringue holds its shape beautifully. This results in those iconic, pillowy peaks that brown to perfection, adding a visual appeal that is just as captivating as its taste.

Don’t be intimidated by the idea of making meringue! Many find it daunting, but I promise it’s actually a surprisingly straightforward process that yields incredibly impressive results with just a few simple steps. With minimal effort, you can create a perfectly fluffy, stable, and show-stopping topping for your pie that will surely elicit gasps of delight from your guests.

Simple Steps to a Fluffy Meringue

Achieving a perfectly pillowy and golden meringue is easier than you think. Follow these straightforward steps for a magnificent topping:

  • Begin by whipping the egg whites in a clean bowl until they form soft, foamy peaks. This incorporates air, which is essential for the meringue’s lightness.
  • Once the egg whites are whipped, gently fold these airy whites into the marshmallow cream. Continue to combine them carefully until the mixture is smooth and evenly airy, ensuring the marshmallow creme is fully integrated.
  • After spreading the assembled meringue gracefully over the pie, bake it for just a few minutes in a hot oven. This brief baking period allows the meringue to turn a lovely golden brown and set, creating a delightfully toasted finish that enhances its flavor and texture.

When the meringue is finished baking, its toasted surface will taste exactly like deliciously caramelized marshmallows – a perfect, nostalgic complement to the warm, spiced sweet potato filling! It is crucial, however, to prepare the meringue no more than 6 hours before you plan to serve the pie. This timing tip is vital for optimal texture and freshness. While the gluten-free crust and the creamy sweet potato filling can be prepared a day in advance and refrigerated, the meringue is at its absolute best when enjoyed on the same day it is made. This ensures the meringue maintains its light, airy quality and prevents it from “weeping” or deflating, keeping your pie visually and texturally perfect for serving.

Serving and Storing Your Masterpiece

This sweet potato pie consistently delivers that coveted “wow factor” whenever I bring it to a holiday gathering. The combination of its impressive appearance, delightful layers of flavor, and thoughtful gluten-free and dairy-free options makes it a truly inclusive dessert that caters to various palates and dietary needs. Serve it slightly warm or at room temperature to fully appreciate its complex flavors and varied textures, allowing the spices to truly shine. For storage, after the initial cooling period, the baked pie (without the meringue) can be covered tightly and refrigerated for up to 2-3 days. If the meringue has already been added, for optimal quality, it is best consumed within 6 hours of being baked. I sincerely hope your family and friends enjoy this wonderful dessert as much as mine does, creating cherished holiday memories and leaving a lasting impression around the festive table.

Author: Erin Collins

Prep Time: 1 hour

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Additional Cooling Time: 4 hours

Servings: 8

Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • ⅔ cup (3oz) pecans
  • 4 oz gluten-free graham crackers
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon The Spice Hunter Highland Harvested Saigon Cinnamon™
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted (use vegan butter for dairy-free)

For the Custard:

  • 1 ½ lbs sweet potatoes (about 3 medium/large sweet potatoes)
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream (or full-fat coconut milk for dairy-free)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon The Spice Hunter Highland Harvested Saigon Cinnamon™
  • ½ teaspoon The Spice Hunter Madagascar Pure Vanilla Extract
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ginger
  • 2 eggs

For the Meringue:

  • 1 (7 oz) jar Marshmallow Creme
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon Spice Hunter Madagascar Pure Vanilla Extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup sugar

Instructions

Make the Crust:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In the bowl of a food processor, combine the pecans, gluten-free graham crackers, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon Spice Hunter Saigon Cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon ground ginger. Pulse 5-6 times until the mixture forms fine, even crumbs.
  3. Add the 4 tablespoons of melted butter and pulse an additional 2-3 times until the butter is fully incorporated and the mixture is uniformly moist and clumps together.
  4. Press the crumb mixture evenly into the bottom and up the sides of the prepared pie pan. Ensure it is compact and forms a solid, uniform crust.
  5. Bake the crust for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside to cool slightly while you prepare the filling.

Make the Custard:

  1. While the crust bakes, begin cooking the sweet potatoes for the filling.
  2. INSTANT POT Method (Preferred): Place a steamer rack inside your Instant Pot and add 1 cup of water. Place the washed, unpeeled sweet potatoes on top of the rack. Secure the lid, set the valve to sealing, and cook on MANUAL (high pressure) for 15 minutes. Allow for a natural pressure release until the valve drops on its own (approximately 10-15 minutes).
  3. STOVE TOP Method: Place whole, unpeeled sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Cover the pot with a lid and bring to a boil. Boil for 10 minutes, then carefully puncture each sweet potato three times with a fork. Continue to boil for another 20-30 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender and cooked through.
  4. Once cooked, peel the sweet potatoes and place them in a large mixing bowl. Allow them to cool slightly. Add the ⅓ cup brown sugar, ⅓ cup heavy cream (or coconut milk), ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon Spice Hunter Saigon Cinnamon, ½ teaspoon Spice Hunter Madagascar Pure Vanilla Extract, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon ginger.
  5. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the sweet potato mixture until it is very smooth and free of any lumps.
  6. Add the 2 eggs to the sweet potato mixture and continue to whip until the custard is exceptionally smooth and all ingredients are well combined.
  7. Pour the prepared sweet potato custard into the pre-baked pie crust, smoothing the top with a spatula to ensure an even layer.
  8. Bake the pie for 40 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. If the edges of the crust begin to brown too quickly, you may cover them loosely with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning.
  9. Let the baked pie cool completely at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Then, transfer it to the refrigerator and allow it to chill for a minimum of 4 hours before topping with the meringue. This crucial cooling time is essential for the custard to fully set and firm up.

Make the Meringue:

  1. Position an oven rack in the top third of your oven and preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Scrape the entire 7 oz jar of marshmallow creme into a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a separate, very clean large bowl (free of any grease), beat the 3 egg whites, ⅛ teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon Spice Hunter Madagascar Pure Vanilla Extract with a hand mixer (or stand mixer with whisk attachment) until foamy. Gradually add the ¼ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, continuing to beat until stiff, glossy peaks form.
  4. Add approximately ½ cup of the beaten egg whites to the marshmallow creme. Gently stir with a rubber spatula until just incorporated. This step helps to lighten the marshmallow creme, which will be very sticky initially, making it easier to fold in the remaining whites.
  5. Carefully fold in the remaining whipped egg whites in two additions, taking care not to overmix. The goal is to gently incorporate the whites to maintain their airy volume and light texture.
  6. Spread the marshmallow meringue evenly over the thoroughly chilled sweet potato pie. Create attractive peaks and swirls with the back of your spoon or spatula for an elegant finish.
  7. Bake the pie (with meringue) for 5-7 minutes, or until the meringue is beautifully golden brown and lightly toasted on the peaks. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning, as meringues can brown quickly.
  8. Let the pie cool at room temperature for 1 hour before serving. For best results, serve the pie within 6 hours of adding and toasting the meringue to ensure optimal texture and freshness.

Notes

  • MAKE IT DAIRY-FREE: For a delicious dairy-free version, simply substitute the butter with a high-quality vegan butter and replace the heavy cream in the custard with full-fat coconut milk (from a can, shaken well before use).
  • My preferred method for cooking sweet potatoes is the Instant Pot, as detailed above. It consistently yields perfectly tender sweet potatoes with minimal effort every time, making your prep smoother.
  • For optimal texture and appearance, prepare the marshmallow meringue no more than 6 hours before you intend to serve the pie. While the crust and custard can be made a day in advance and refrigerated, the meringue is at its absolute best when enjoyed fresh, ensuring its light and airy quality.
